چکیده

Ensemble Prediction has become an essential part of numerical weather forecasting. In this paper we investigate the ability of ensemble forecasts to provide an a priori estimate of the expected forecast skill. Several quantities derived from the local ensemble distribution are investigated for a two year data set of European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) temperature and wind speed ensemble forecasts at 30 German stations. The results indicate that the population of the ensemble mode provides useful information for the uncertainty in temperature forecasts. The ensemble entropy is a similar good measure. This is not true for the spread if it is simply calculated as the variance of the ensemble members with respect to the ensemble mean. The number of clusters in the C regions is almost unrelated to the local skill. For wind forecasts, the results are less promising.

Skill and relative economic value of medium-range hydrological ensemble predictions

A hydrological ensemble prediction system, integrating a water balance model with ensemble precipitation forecasts from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Ensemble Prediction System (EPS), is evaluated for two Belgian catchments using verification methods borrowed from meteorology. The skill of the probability forecast that the streamflow exceeds a given level is mea...

Can a multi-model approach improve hydrological ensemble forecasting? A study on 29 French catchments using 16 hydrological model structures

An operational hydrological ensemble forecasting system based on a meteorological ensemble prediction system (M-EPS) coupled with a hydrological model searches to capture the uncertainties associated with the meteorological prediction to better predict river flows. However, the structure of the hydrological model is also an important source of uncertainty that has to be taken into account. This...

Sub-seasonal tropical cyclone genesis prediction and MJO in the S2S dataset

Subseasonal probabilistic prediction of tropical cyclone (TC) genesis is investigated here using models from the seasonal to subseasonal (S2S) dataset. Forecasts are produced for basin-wide TC occurrence at weekly temporal resolution. Forecast skill is measured using the Brier skill score relative to two no-skill climatological forecasts: an annual mean climatology that is constant through the ...

A comparison of predictors of the error of weather forecasts

Three different potential predictors of forecast error – ensemble spread, mean errors of recent forecasts and the local gradient of the predicted field – were compared. The comparison was performed using the forecasts of 500 hPa geopotential and 2-m temperature of the ECMWF ensemble prediction system at lead times of 96, 168 and 240 h, over North America for each day in 2004. Ensemble spread wa...

Ensemble forecasting

Numerical weather prediction models as well as the atmosphere itself can be viewed as nonlinear dynamical systems in which the evolution depends sensitively on the initial conditions. The fact that estimates of the current state are inaccurate and that numerical models have inadequacies, leads to forecast errors that grow with increasing forecast lead time. The growth of errors depends on the f...
